A Simple Introduction to Chanoyu

Matcha Afternoon is a casual, small-group introduction to Chanoyu, the Japanese way of tea.

Designed especially for first-time visitors, the 50-minute session offers an opportunity to enjoy Japanese sweets and matcha, watch a tea demonstration, and prepare your own bowl of matcha.

No previous experience is required. Each session is open to a maximum of six guests, allowing you to enjoy the experience in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

Discover the basic ideas of Chanoyu and learn about the utensils used to prepare matcha. An English handout will be provided to help you follow the experience.

Taste

Enjoy traditional Japanese dry sweets and a bowl of freshly prepared matcha while watching a tea demonstration.

Try preparing your own bowl of matcha using a bamboo whisk. No previous experience is needed—we will guide you through the basic steps.

No. Matcha Afternoon is designed for first-time visitors, and no previous experience is required.

Can I join by myself?

Yes. Matcha Afternoon is an open group session, and solo guests are very welcome.

Is the session conducted in English?

Simple guidance will be provided in English, together with an English handout explaining Chanoyu, tea utensils, and the basic steps of the experience.

Do I need to sit in seiza?

No previous experience with sitting on tatami is required. If sitting on the floor is difficult for you, please let us know when booking.

What if I have food allergies or dietary restrictions?

Please let us know about any food allergies or dietary restrictions when booking. We will provide information about the sweets served whenever possible.

  • Please wear socks in the Japanese-style room. White socks are preferred. If you are wearing sandals or other footwear without socks, please bring a pair with you.
  • All utensils and equipment needed for the experience will be provided. You do not need to bring anything with you.
  • Please note that payments are non-refundable after your booking has been confirmed.
  • You may enter the room from 10 minutes before the session begins.
  • Photos and videos may be taken during the session for documentation purposes.
  • Some photos and videos may also be used on our website, social media, or other promotional materials. When you book, we will ask whether you consent to the use of photos or videos in which you can be personally identified.
